We pre-define a scaling profile for each type of event – specific to your site and refined over time – so that there’s no reinventing the wheel each time. The right layer, the right way. The four modes above are about when we scale. Underneath, they all draw on one toolkit: scaling the right layer — application, database, cache, search and storage — in the right direction.
Vertical means resizing a node up or down; Horizontal means adding or removing nodes.
The maturity isn’t a single autoscaling switch; it’s applying the right direction at the right layer for the situation in front of us. Horizontal scaling applies to web servers and to database reads (read replicas); writes scale vertically, on Aurora’s single writer.
A word of caution when you’re comparing providers: “cloud” and “Kubernetes” are sometimes used to dress up what is really fixed, dedicated infrastructure.
Kubernetes running on a pre-paid, always-on cluster can look like advanced cloud architecture, but if the capacity is fixed and paid for, whether you use it or not, then “scaling” is just scheduling onto resources you’ve already bought. You’re still paying full price through every quiet period.

Cache & Search

- The cache layer (ElastiCache / Redis) and search (OpenSearch) are resized in the same controlled way, without downtime
- Redis can also be split across two instances: one for user sessions, one for the Magento cache, so the two workloads never contend for the same resource
Enterprise Scaling, Extended to Magento Open Source
Adobe Commerce supports read/write traffic separation out of the box, at the application level – but it only pays off if the database underneath has read replicas to send the reads to. On most hosting setups it doesn’t, so the feature sits idle.
K-Hosting unlocks this capability for Adobe Commerce merchants by providing the read-replica infrastructure behind it: Aurora’s read-replica topology gives those reads somewhere to go.
We bring the same capability to Magento Open Source, which has no native read/write separation, through open-source modules such as this read/write splitter, with reads routed to replicas, writes kept on the master, and automatic fallback if a replica drops..
High availability is built into Aurora itself: your data is continuously replicated across multiple Availability Zones on a distributed, self-healing storage layer. If the primary instance fails, Aurora promotes a replica automatically, often within seconds.
And because Aurora runs a single writer over shared storage, rather than a Galera-style synchronous multi-master cluster (where every write must be certified across all nodes before it commits), your writes avoid that cross-node penalty and the write latency that slows busy stores on multi-master backends.
